About The Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a volunteer organization of lay people founded by Frank Duff inThe Legion of Mary was founded by Frank Duff on 7 September 1921 at Myra House, Francis Street, in Dublin. His idea was to help Catholic lay people fulfil their baptismal promises to be able to live their dedication to the Church in an organized structure, which would be supported by fraternity and prayer.

Hence the aim is to sanctify its members and to spread the Catholic faith under the powerful Leadership of Mary Immaculate. The Legion’s battle for souls must begin in the heart of the individual legionary. Each one must wage the battle with himself, determinedly conquering in his heart the spirit of pride and self. The basis of each legionary's strength is the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Through her, legionaries receive the graces and strength to firstly conform themselves to her likeness and secondly to pass on that likeness to others. The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual and social welfare of each individual. The members participate in the life of the parish through the visitation of families, the sick, both in their homes and in hospitals and through collaboration with any apostolic works undertaken by the parish. The works of the legionaries have bought many a soul to the faith and rekindled the faith in lapsed Catholics.
